beatles
Few artists have impacted music and culture like The Beatles. Consisting of George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, the band spearheaded the 1960s British Invasion. From 1963-1970, The Beatles racked up numerous number one hits as well as commercially and critically successful albums such as Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Abbey Road.
From 1964-1966, Beatlemania dominated the music world; female fans followed them everywhere, screaming so loudly at concerts that they drowned out the music. Their “mop top” haircuts, matching suits, and Liverpudlian slang greatly influenced mid-60s popular culture. By 1967, their landmark album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band provided the soundtrack for the burgeoning psychedelic movement.
Throughout their career, The Beatles experimented with new recording techniques and expanded the rock genre with their use of orchestration, different chord changes, and poetic lyrics. Years of internal strife led to their disbanding in 1970; debate still rages as to the exact cause of the breakup. All four members went on to establish successful solo careers, but the group's influence lives on through the Cirque du Soleil show Love, the 90s documentary series Anthology, and several CD reissues that consistently reach the top of the charts.
