beijing 2008
Beijing 2008 was the place to be during the summer as the Summer Olympics were held there during the month of August.
The 29th edition of the Summer Games saw another star-studded performance by the best athletes in the world, some of whom were shown competing live on just the East Coast of the United States; but the Games were given unprecedented coverage using online video shown on NBCOlympics.com. Michael Phelps won eight gold medals in swimming, an unprecedented feat. Usain Bolt, a virtual unknown sprinter from Jamaica just a year ago, set the record in both the 100- (9.69 seconds) and 200-meter (19.30) dashes, winning both easily over star-studded fields. The USA Men’s Basketball Team redeemed itself, securing gold for the first time since 2000, and helping the United States top the overall medal standings, securing 110 over the two-week period, edging out China (100) and Russia (72).
However, the biggest star(s) of the games may have been China pulling off the most spectacular and innovative Opening and Closing Ceremonies ever seen. Perhaps London should just pop in tapes of the happenings in Beijing when they host in 2012?
