Actor Bernie Mac, born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough (1957-2008), started his career in stand-up comedy before branching off into movies.  Bit parts in films like Mo' Money and Who's The Man? led to his breakout role as Pastor Clever in 1995's Friday.  Those led to larger roles in films like Ocean's Eleven and Thirteen, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Bad Santa, and Head Of StateSpike Lee's The Original Kings of Comedy followed the comic, along with Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer, and D.L. Hughley, as he returned to his roots.

Bernie turned to television in 2001 in the award-winning The Bernie Mac Show.  The hit program was said to mirror his own life.  In it, he was awarded custody of his sister's children while she was in rehab.  The format, part sitcom and part social commentary, allowed him to break down the "fourth wall" as if he were talking directly to his audience.

Sadly, while Bernie Mac had been in remission since 2005 from an inflammatory lung disease (sarcoidosis), he died from complications due to pneumonia.
