Betting refers to staking something on an uncertain outcome. The term also applies to gambling, or the wagering of money on the uncertain outcome of a race or some type of sports event. Sports betting is very popular around the world, with bookmakers taking bets at agreed upon odds.

Betting odds are not the actual chances that a certain result will occur, but instead they represent the amount that the bookmaker will pay out on winning bets. Bookmakers have to take profit margin into account, which usually means that the payout is going to be less than that represented by the chance of the desired outcome occurring.
