Beyonce – born Beyonce Giselle Knowles on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas – is an internationally renowned vocalist and songwriter in the fields of R&B, pop, hip/hop, and soul. She is also a motion-picture actress, having landed roles in Dreamgirls, The Fighting Temptations, and Austin Powers in Goldmember.

She first earned recognition as a founding member of Destiny’s Child, whose hit singles like “Say My Name,” “Independent Women, Part 1,” and “Bootylicious” helped the group amass album sales of nearly 18 million in the United States.

In 2003, Beyonce officially went solo with Dangerously In Love, fueled by the smash hit, “Crazy In Love.” The album won five Grammy Awards, distinguishing Beyonce as only the fifth female artist in music history to have achieved such a feat. Her 2006 sophomore effort, B’Day, sold relatively well, yet its success paled to that of its predecessor. In November 2008, Beyonce released I Am… Sasha Fierce, a double album on which she assumed the alter-ego of her onstage persona.

After an extended courtship, Beyonce married rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z in April 2008.
