In July, I asked readers for their questions on Health at Every Size to be answered by a registered dietitian who promotes the practice. The original dietitian became unavailable, so I asked fellow ASDAH member Deb Kauffmann to step in. Deborah is a registered dietitian and a licensed dietitian/nutritionist currently in private practice in Baltimore, Maryland.

Ashley- Intern Extraordinaire It is estimated that 1-3% of young adult women and one tenth that number of men suffer from the eating disorder bulimia nervosa, which involves binge eating followed by purging and feelings of guilt and shame. The goal of treatment is to unearth the factors that trigger such a disorder.

I’m noticing that the poll at the sidebar is showing that plenty of readers are currently engaged in bulimic behavior. Obviously, that’s not healthy.  But it’s not surprising, either; this is an eating disorder recovery community, after all!

Ever wonder if you have a serious problem with binge eating? Sometimes it is hard to assess how serious a problem actually is. Of course, there are different definitions of what binge eating is, and what constitutes a binge. No matter how you define it, most people want to STOP.

I bring you good tidings from the state of Illinois, where House Bill 1432 has been passed by the Illinois House of Representatives! I reported on this bill in June while it was “under review” by Ill. Governor Rod Blagojevich and encouraged readers to contact the governor encouraging him to sign it into law.

What is an eating disorder? Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder form a complex and chronic illness.  Nothing ever happens in a fraction of a second. It takes a rather a long time to develop an eating disorder like Bulimia or anorexia. For its treatment to be a success it takes even longer time.
