bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, is a psychiatric disorder characterized by severe mood swings between periods of mania with exaggerated euphoria, irritability, or both, and episodes of depression. Over 10 million Americans, including Terri Cheney and Carrie Fisher, suffer from bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is primarily managed through medication.
Since bipolar disorder can have many different symptoms associated with it, it is difficult to diagnose, and there is a controversy surrounding the diagnosis of bipolar children. There is no known cause for this chemical disorder, although research is pointing towards a genetic mutation.
There are many internet resources for bipolar patients and their families.
