Birthstone jewelry contains semiprecious or precious gemstones that correlate with the month in which a person was born.

Each month of the year is represented by a different gem – January is garnet, February is amethyst, March is aquamarine or bloodstone, April is diamond, May is emerald, June is pearl, moonstone, or alexandrite, July is ruby, August is peridot or sardonyx, September is sapphire, October is opal or pink tourmaline, November is citrine or yellow topaz, and December is blue topaz or turquoise.

Modern birthstones can be traced to Jewish gem traders who arrived in Poland in the 18th century. However, today’s list of birthstones was only defined in 1912, by the National Association of Jewelers (Jewelers of America) of the United States.
