Bizarro is a fictional character in Superman comics whose name has come to represent a statement or opinion that is the complete opposite of reality. The comic book Bizarro was created by Otto Binder in 1958 in Superboy #68. Patterned after Frankenstein’s monster, Bizarro is a kind of anti-Superman, possessing all of his powers but having the opposite outlook and understanding. His speech reflects this: if he says something is “bad” he means it is “good,” he would attempt to mimic Superhero’s heroics by using his powers to start an earthquake or cause a train to crash, rather than saving the victims of a naturally occurring disaster. He would try to fight crime by robbing a bank. He lives on a Bizarro World populated by other opposites: Bizarro World’s Batman, called Batzarro, is the World’s Worst Detective and carries “a futility belt.” Outside of comic book discussions, Bizarro is therefore a pejorative indicating a view that is 180-degrees off. A statement so completely wrong it must be a deliberate inversion.
