Blackjack commonly refers to one of the most popular casino games in the world. It shares some similarities with poker, but it is an entirely different game and has its own rules and strategies. Also known as twenty-one, it is a banking game in which one or several decks of 52 playing cards can be used.

Historically, the exact origin of twenty-one remains unknown. When it was introduced to the United States, gambling houses would initially offer bonus payouts to stimulate gamblers to play.

One of these bonuses was a ten to one payout if the player had managed to make a hand with the ace of spades and one black jack (of spades or clubs). Interestingly, the name blackjack is derived form this type of lucky hand. Later, however, as gambling became increasingly popular, these bonuses disappeared.

Of course, with computers and Internet in almost every household, online blackjack is just as popular, if not more so, than the original game.

As this is essentially a two player game, the only adversary the player has to beat is the dealer or banker. Although many variations exist, the most simple rule of the game states that the player is to draw a card to an initial two-card hand dealt face-up, with the purpose of bringing the total hand value as close to 21 as possible, without running over it, however. Playing this right would mean that the banker, whose turn comes right after the player's, will either lose by going over the 21 value, or by falling short of the value in the player's hand.

If the player is dealt an ace, he or she can choose to count it as having either the value of 11 or 1, depending on which value is more advantageous. Face cards are all worth 10 points, while the remaining cards are worth the point equivalent of their numeric value (for example, an eight will be worth 8 points).

When this game is played in a casino, players can place bets at the blackjack table, typically with previously set minimum and maximum bets.
