Blinkx was founded in 2004 by Suranga Chandratillake in the city of San Francisco, California. Blinkx aims to be the "world’s largest and most advanced video search engine...with an index of over 26 million hours of searchable video and more than 350 media partnerships." Blinkx also allows for searching of audio files through its interface.
In mid-2008, Blinkx made public a bid to acquire pay-per-click ad network MIVA, but dropped its pursuit in October 2008. In August 2008, Blinkx launched a service known as "Blinkx Remote" which offers over 10,000 indexed episodes of mainstream television for people to view through their site.
