blood glucose
Blood glucose is the level of sugar in the blood as measured in clinical laboratory studies or by using a personal blood glucose meter. Exceedingly high blood glucose levels may indicate the presence of diabetes; if left unchecked, they can lead to serious complications, such as heart disease, vision problems, kidney disease and amputations.
Treatment of diabetes is aimed at tight control of blood glucose levels. Type I diabetics require insulin to control their blood glucose levels. Many Type II diabetics can achieve good blood glucose control through diet and exercise alone, while others may need the added help of oral medications or insulin injections. Ongoing research focuses on finding ways to control blood glucose through traditional, alternative or complementary medicine.
