If you're wondering what causes blood clots, a.k.a. thrombus, it is the result of blood coagulation, which is a normal and healthy reaction to bleeding. However, blood clots can also form in abnormal conditions, when they can cause a series of life threatening conditions, including pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke.

Venous thrombosis, or blood clots in the veins, can sometimes develop in bedridden individuals, when blood flow is not supported by muscle contractions. However, venous blood clots can also be caused by heart disease, clogged arteries, or superficial injury to the blood vessels.

Blood clots that form in large blood vessels will decrease blood flow, whilst blood clots in small vessels can block blood flow entirely. A stroke occurs when a thrombus has decreased or cut off the blood flow in the brain.

Blood clots frequently form in veins in the legs and pelvis, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis. However, blood clots can sometimes break off from their formation point, and travel to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or the brain. Blood clots lodged in lung arteries are potentially life-threatening, and require immediate treatment.

Natural News: Hillary Clinton treated for blood clot located dangerously close to her brain
Wednesday, January 02, 2013
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is recovering from a blood clot located in a dangerous place: in her head, between the brain and the skull. Blood clots so close to the brain can cause neurological damage, but she is now receiving blood thinners and is expected to make a full recovery.

The blood clot that Clinton developed, called a sinus venous thrombosis, has been deemed an uncommon complication by her doctors.

While the American Heart Association is not yet ready to recommend vitamin E against stroke, evidence suggests that women who take vitamin E are 21 percent less likely to develop blood clots. The same study showed that women who suffer from a genetic predisposition to blood clots are 50 percent less likely to develop blood clots if they consume vitamin E regularly.
