In the early ages, boats were used for practical purposes. They were used mainly to transport people from one island to another or to fish the oceans for food. They were a means to an end. Nothing more. However, the uses for boats have evolved much since then.

Once boats became a safe transport and fishing vessel, they began being used for trade. Spices and supplies were transported and traded from country to country.

Well, when these trade ships began to be attacked and looted, other boats were created to defend those boats. Navies were born. Hence, boats began to be used for defense and military purposes. Navies became extremely important to countries who wanted to both protect and conquer.

Nowadays, boats are used extensively for recreation as pleasure crafts requiring a boat license in most areas of the world. Boats are used for vacation cruises and leisure, and one of the greatest status symbols of wealth is a personal yacht. Owners can now purchase a boat and some boat insurance and have their own private getaway from the tedious and the mundane.
