bob marley
Mention reggae music and many people immediately think of Bob Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981). As lead singer and guitarist for The Wailers (1964-1974) and Bob Marley and The Wailers (1974-1981) he was the person most responsible for bringing the sounds of Jamaican music to the world.
As a songwriter, his music has been covered by such diverse acts as Eric Clapton, Warren G, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Will Smith all with their own takes of "I Shot The Sheriff." I Am Legend, the movie that features Smith's version, also has three other Marley songs, "Stir It Up," "Three Little Birds," and "Redemption Song." Marley's "No Woman, No Cry" has had over thirty artists record their interpretations of the song.
Also prolific in his personal life, many of Bob Marley's offspring are musicians as well. Eldest son David, better known as Ziggy Marley, and his group The Melody Makers has many of his brothers and sisters performing with him.
