Bodybuilding began gaining popularity in the 1890's with Eugene Sandow (Mr. Olympia trophy), however stone dumbbells have been traced back to the 11th century.
In the 1940's Mr. America was the first bodybuilding competition that started the golden era of bodybuilding. The Mr. Universe began in 1950 and The Olympia began in 1965.
Arnold Schwarzenegger won the Olympia 1970-1974 and again in 1980 bringing bodybuilding to Hollywood. Bodybuilding had become a multi-million dollar business from magazines to supplements.
There are 4 types of bodybuilders including natural, professional, women and teenagers and the newest type gaining popularity now is the raw food or vegan bodybuilder. Some people "build their bodies" at home using home work routines such as the popular P90X.
