Bracelets are pieces of jewelry that are typically meant to be worn around the wrist, although bracelets for the arm and ankle are also available. They are made out of leather, plastic, metal or fabric, and can have highlights made out of wood, bone, shells, gems or other materials. Bracelets come under numerous shapes and sizes, usually as bands, chains, or hoops, and are commonly worn as accessories that complement clothing.

Throughout various cultures, however, bracelets have come to hold different meanings. Bangles are traditionally worn by South Asian Hindu women to symbolize matrimony. Brides will wear as many as they can at their wedding and will not take them off intentionally, but will leave them on until every bangle breaks. These are usually made out of copper, bronze, or other metals and have become quite popular worldwide, as an exotic adornment.

Sometimes, bracelets can be carried as charms, to symbolize things with a strong significance for the wearer. Bracelets made out of plastic or wood beads, that are associated with the ability to influence one's luck, are common to many world cultures, from Native Americans, to Indians, to African peoples. While body ornaments are nowadays conventionally associated with women's fashion, men's jewelry has had numerous cultural implications since ancient times, either as a means of displaying social standing, or to indicate belonging to a certain group or tribe. When manufactured out of rare, fine metals or containing various decorative precious stones, bracelets, paired with other articles of jewelry and clothing, would indicate wealth or royalty.

In modern days, wearing jewelry as a fashion statement is less widespread among men, while some simply choose to wear wristbands or gel bracelets that are usually considered less feminine.

Historically, bracelets have been manufactured in Egypt at least for the last 7000 years. One of the most recognizable models today uses a common motif in Egyptian culture - the scarab - which represented continual transformation or renewal of life. Scarab bracelets were worn as homage to Khepri, a major Egyptian god responsible for the passing of the sun across the sky.

Outside the fashion industry, bracelets can be used for identification purposes, usually for patients within a medical establishment or people present at various other venues.
