Breakfast is usually served as the first meal of the day. The eating of breakfast is linked to such health benefits as increased energy and greater intellectual performance (especially for children).

In the Western world, breakfast may consist of any combination of eggs prepared in a variety of ways (i.e. fried, boiled, baked, scrambled, in an omelet, or as an ingredient in French toast) a breakfast meat (ie. bacon, sausage, scrapple), and/or potatoes (hash browns, home fries). Other options include waffles, pancakes, or porridge (ie. oatmeal or grits), baked goods (danishes, donuts, croissants, breads, bagels, rolls, muffins, biscuits, scones), or cereal (sometimes topped with fruit). Common beverages include coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, and fruit juice.

Elsewhere, rice (and rice porridge), soups, dumplings (like dim sum), fish, pickled vegetables, and noodles are also breakfast options.

Many feel they are too busy to have a full breakfast on the days they work and either skip breakfast or have a simple continental breakfast, often on the run.

Due to its low cost and ease of preparation, it's become more common for people (especially college students, those with night jobs, and fans of diners) to eat breakfast at other times of the day. Blinner is a word that describes a meal that serves as a combination of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, often enjoyed by those who've overslept or who have skipped meals due to limited time.
