A breast implant is simply an implant placed within a breast to increase the breast's volume and provide the appearance of fullness. Surgery to place, remove and/or replace breast implants is included within the discipline of Plastic Surgery.

Breast implants can be placed for reconstructive (such as following breast removal [mastectomy] for breast cancer) or cosmetic purposes. They are currently constructed of a semi-soft silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or saline (salt water.) The silicone gel-filled variety recently came out from under FDA restriction in the United States after a 14 year ban ended in 2007.

The blogosphere's interactions with breast implants are varied as online forums are abuzz as to whether or not the breasts of any given celebrity are "real" or "fake" (containing breast implants.) A very vocal minority of women claiming breast implants are dangerous also resides online. The numbers of women affected in these "nightmare" depictions is extremely small relative to the large number of women worldwide who have had breast implants.
