Bridal lingerie refers to a type of fashionable and alluring undergarments meant to be worn by women on their wedding night. Unlike conventional undergarments, which are made of cotton for more comfort and functionality, bridal lingerie is usually made of fine, stretchy materials, like satin, silk, lycra, lace or sheer fabric.


Numerous styles are available, generally incorporating items such as basques (longer corsets), bustiers, and strapless bras, and usually in beautiful shades of gold, red, black, ivory, purple and white, laced with golden fabric and other exquisite materials. Stockings and fine shoes are often additional accessories that complete an alluring look.


Before the late nineteenth century, most of women's undergarments were generally thick and bulky and were worn mainly for functional reasons, so as to provide support for the bust, and were typically worn under large dresses. Corsets, dating as far back as the sixteenth century, were among the first items of underclothing to be worn for fashionable purposes.


However, the demand for fitting and more comfortable undergarments surged when the First World War broke out in the early twentieth century, as women gradually began filling in more and more typically masculine work roles. Brassieres worn as sexy lingerie, alongside smaller panties made of lighter and more breathable fabrics, also became popular during the early 20th century.


Moreover, as television and Hollywood movie productions rapidly gained popularity during the first half of the twentieth century, a glamorized image of lingerie as a type of seductive bedroom-wear emerged.


Nowadays, the global lingerie market is estimated at over 30 billion dollars, with bras accounting for over 50% of sales, while briefs make up over 30% of sales. A variety of luxury stores offer classy and elegant bridal lingerie for all sizes, simple or embroidered with classic and modern motifs, typically to be found with matching briefs or thongs.


Mostly inspired by French bedroom fashion and ostentatious Hollywood depictions of the 50s and 60s, several types of long or revealing luxury bridal and honeymoon lingerie are becoming increasingly popular today, including the babydoll (a loose and short nightgown for women, with a low-cut neckline, often worn with matching panties), the bodice, the negligee (a sheer and long bedroom gown), the chemise (a loose-fitting, sleeveless, shirt-like piece of lingerie), as well as lace top stockings, lace suspenders, frilled garters, and many more.
