In one episode of the popular TV series The Simpsons, the greedy nuclear power plant CEO, Mr. Montgomery Burns, states glibly, "I am a very, very rich man. But I would give it all up for just a little bit more."

A broker is anyone who is a regulated professional and can buy and sell shares and other securities through market makers on behalf of investors. This person takes our money and tries to, as Mr. Montgomery Burns put it, "give it all up for just a little bit more."

A transaction on a stock exchange must be made between two members of the exchange. This is usually between you and your broker. See, as much as you may like to, an ordinary person can't walk into the New York Stock Exchange and ask to trade stock. Such an exchange must be done through a certified broker.

Depending on the agreement you and your broker have, your broker can buy or sell a stock for you, advise you on which shares to buy and sell, or just ascertain your investment objectives and make all dealing decisions on your behalf.
