Businesses are commercial organizations that trade goods and services to consumers. They are encountered primarily in capitalist economies, where they are privately owned and administered to increase the profit of their owners, but businesses can also be non-profit or owned by the states. Successful businesses are also able to provide jobs in their sector and contribute to the economical development of a country.


Businesses can be classified according to the industry they operate in. For example, agricultural and mining businesses produce raw materials, which manufacturers use to produce goods. Retailers and distributors are essential in getting the manufactured goods to the consumer and can generate profit as a result. Service businesses provide intangible goods for other businesses, governments or consumers. These can include consulting firms, marketing firms and even professional entertainers.

There are four basic forms of ownership for businesses, although variations may exist among different jurisdictions. Sole proprietorship refers to businesses owned by a single person, but to operate the business, the owner may employ other people. A partnership is a business owned by two or more people. Unlike partnerships, corporations have limited liability and are represented by a separate legal personality than any of its members. Corporations are usually privately owned by shareholders who vote on a board of directors that will then hire the actual managerial staff. Cooperatives are similar to corporations, but differ in that some of their members retain decision-making authority.

Today, all medium and large businesses, but also the majority of small businesses, have websites, either for promotional purposes or for e-commerce. Although there is a range of top level and secondary domain names to choose from, by far the fastest growing commercial domain is .com.

Because the restriction on who can register .com websites has been lifted since the late 1990s, non-commercial entities are also able to use this domain for websites, email and networking.
