Alongside Battlefield, Call of Duty is perhaps one of the most popular first person shooter game series for PC, especially due to its multiplayer component. Although originally designed for PC, the game later expanded to consoles, which in turn generated a few spin-offs. The main series comprises of 5 games set in historical sets of war, with 3 main games set during World War 2, and 2 spin-offs set during World War 2, the Cold War and the Vietnam War. A more recent series named Modern Warfare is based on more recent military events, involving Middle Eastern, South American and Russian enemy factions.

Call of Duty was created by Ben Chichoski and is mainly developed by Infinity Ward while published by Activision. The first Call of Duty was released in the fall of 2003 to widespread critical acclaim. Ever since that first installment, the series has seen a steady increase in sales, becoming an immensely popular franchise by 2010. The latest game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops, released in 2010 has sold 5.6 million units in the US and UK markets alone, in just 24 hours upon release, setting a new world record for the largest entertainment launch. It easily earned $360 million and surpasses another much anticipated release that year – Part One of the Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows. Within 5 days, the game had reached $650 million in worldwide sales, well above its predecessors.

The Modern Warfare series counts two games thus far, the first of which is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, originally released in 2007 and the first game to depart from the World War 2 based storyline. Set in 2011, the action is woven around the assassination of a Middle Eastern leader, on the background of an ultra-nationalist movement escalating in Russia. Praised for its engrossing storyline and game play, the game earned favorable reviews from critics, as well as numerous awards, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide by 2008. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out in November 2009 as the sixth installment of the series and a direct Sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Acclaimed by numerous gaming websites for its in-depth multi-player component, the game sold 4.7 million copies in 24 hours, leading Activision to confirm by 2010 that it had sold a total of more than 20 million copies, becoming the best selling game of all time in the UK.

The much anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is currently in development and will contain new features, such as consecutive levels of increased difficulty, a survival mode, as well as in-game cash earnings for accuracy, performance and more. This upcoming game will continue the main story from Modern Warfare 2, with Russia's invasion of the United States, while providing additional campaigns in Europe, Africa and Asia.
