A camcorder is a portable device used to capture audio and video. The name "camcorder" was derived from the fact that it contains both a video camera and a video recorder. When the camcorder was first introduced, it quickly became popular because it eliminated the need for a separate, bulky video recorder unit. The main advantage of the camcorder over its predecessors was portability.

Modern camcorders have three main components: a lens, imager and recorder. The lens is the first device in the light path. The lens, usually made of glass, focuses the light on the imager. The imager is a silicon device, either CCD or CMOS, that converts the pattern of light cast by the moving image into an electronic representation. The recorder stores the electronic signal on a media device - commonly analog tape or digital media such as digital tape or solid-state flash storage.

The consumer market for camcorders has exploded in recent years. Manufacturers such as Sony and JVC sell a wide variety of consumer models with an emphasis on ease-of-use, portability and price. Until recently consumer video editing was a difficult task requiring expensive equipment. The introduction of inexpensive video editing software and video editing services has made consumer video editing more affordable.
