A car dealership is a business that sells new or used cars based on a contract with a vehicle manufacturer or one of its subsidiaries. Cars are sold at retail level through salespeople who help potential customers choose the best vehicle for their needs.

Most new car dealerships are franchises associated with a specific manufacturer, while used car dealerships will usually sell vehicles from different manufacturers. The cars that can be purchased from dealerships around the world come with a wide range of options and accessories, including GPS and vehicle tracking devices.

Car dealerships may offer provide services as well, such as maintenance or the sale of spare parts. In the United States and Canada, car dealerships employ automotive technicians and offer different financing solutions to their clients, including loans and leases.

Franchise laws in the US require that all cars are sold by dealers, so manufacturers cannot sell the vehicles themselves. Additional services offered by car dealers can include different types of service contracts, GAP insurance, life and disability insurance and aftermarket accessories.
