carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are one of the 3 necessary macro-nutrients required for a healthy diet and contain approximately 4 calories per gram. Commonly referred to as “carbs” in the diet industry, there was once a push leading people to believe that they are either bad for you or should be cut out when starting a weight loss diet.
The “low carb” craze started shortly after the “fat free” phase and sooner or later there will probably just be the “no food at all” phase if we let big business and marketing continue to drive our nutritional requirements and eating patterns.
There is nothing wrong with a balanced portion of calories coming from carbohydrates even when attempting to burn fat for weight loss. Carbohydrates should be balanced with protein and healthy fats, and it is a good idea to always include high fiber carbs like green vegetables to slow down digestion allowing for sustained energy release in the body.
Carbohydrates that are high in refined sugars are generally referred to as “empty calories” and should be avoided when possible while replacing them with antioxidant rich fruits as a much healthier snack.
