carbs

Carbs (the short abbreviation for carbohydrates) contain 4 calories per gram and are one of the 3 major macro-nutrients which also include fat and protein. Carbs are primarily responsible for converting to the bulk of our energy needs in the body and have been subject to much debate with the very low carb diet approaches such as the Atkins diet. A more moderate carb would be The Zone by Barry Sears that includes healthy recipes that call for a balanced approach to carbs, fats, and proteins to optimize the gastric emptying rate allowing for sustainable energy and fat loss with consistent stabilized blood sugar levels.

Complex carbs are consumed for more sustainable energy and are found in foods such as potatoes, yams, rice, and grains. Simple sugars more commonly found in snack foods and candy are also carbohydrates, but digest much faster leading to quickly rising insulin levels and a quicker drop in energy with the unused blood sugars typically being stored as fat if there is no room left for glycogen replacement in the liver or muscle tissue.

You can find a lot of information on carbs and healthy eating at Former Fat Guy including recipes, exercises, and more.
