When it comes to carpets, what is all the posturing and saber-rattling about? It's not like we're buying a magic carpet here. It's not like these things will take us up on a flying ride through the clouds. It's a carpet. You walk on it. What's the big deal?

Plenty.

A carpet is never "just" a carpet. Do you want a tight twist? Kashmir? Shaggy? What type of pattern? Remember, there are as many different types of carpets as there are different types of people in the world. And what you ultimately need to "pad your pad" depends on your personal taste and budget. Size, traffic, padding underneath, resale value of your home, life of the carpet, etc. are all questions you need to ask yourself before you even begin to look at carpets, rugs, and carpet scraps.

Most carpets consist of an upper layer of fabric attached to some sort of backing. The fabric is generally twisted tufts that have been heat treated. However, the similarities end right there. From that point on you can get just about anything you want when it comes to taste, style, cost, and comfort.
