cat litter

Tag details

Cat litter (or Kitty litter) is any substance used in a domestic cat’s litter box to absorb urine and serve the cat’s instinct to cover its solid waste as it would in the wild, reducing odor. Litter can be any type of shredded newspaper, wood chips, gravel or sand, but most cat-owners prefer commercial products that are specially made to reduce odor and bacteria. Litter must be sifted daily to remove solid waste. Until the late 1980s, the remaining litter had to be changed regularly as what was left after sifting would still retain urine. In the late 80s, “clumpable” litter was developed, a sand-like substances which forms flushable ‘balls’ when wet. This innovation allowed all waste to be removed daily with a simple sifting, and made the whole prospect of keeping a domestic cat easier and more hygienic. Cats do not need to be trained to use a litter box, and most cats will accept any type of litter with any consistency. If a cat has a strong preference for gravel or sand texture, it might indicate an injured paw and its paws should be carefully inspected.
