Cat 5e is the generally accepted abbreviation for Category 5e cabling systems and components.
Category 5e has been first introduced in 1999 primarily as an attempt to ensure that 1Gbit/s Ethernet (1000Base-T variety) would work over existing Category 5 cabling links already produced at the time by leading cabling manufacturers.
Category 5e standard describes a set of additional characteristics, not addressed in the older Category 5 specification, specifically delay skew that first has become an important issue with Gigabit Ethernet because this was the first major networking application that required all four pairs available in the cable.
