Caterers and their staff are part of the food service industry.

A caterer is a person who prepares food for groups of people, be it at a wedding, a funeral, a fund raiser or other party or function. Caterers are distinct in that they take the food they prepare to the customer, instead of having the customer come to them.

Caterers may include cooks, chefs and prep workers. In general, they prepare a wide variety of foods ranging from side dishes to main courses or even complete meals.

Raw food catering services are becoming more prevalent to appeal to those who are partaking in a raw food diet.

A form of catering, called mobile catering, is when food is served directly from a vehicle or cart. Mobile caterers are often seen at outdoor events like concerts, outside of factories or other workplaces, or in major business districts with lots of foot traffic.
