Late yesterday evening I received an e-mail from Eric Blair, a regular reader and commenter around here and a friend of mine since the days when we were both part of the commentariat at the blog of the late Cathy Seipp. Like me, Eric is an academic, but works in a different field than mine.

I spent most of Thursday on the road, driving down I-35 to Laredo to deliver some old items from my garage to friends, and then later visiting some old stomping grounds and a relative. Thus, I'm a bit late in posting this entry and replying to the latest comments on this blog.

Stupid bitch. My social life has collapsed since then. I can no longer go to the LA Press Club with any feeling of belonging. I’m just a stray dog again. I need my owner. I want my special doggy bowl and doggy pillow and I want to go for a walk. Cathy was one of the few people who enjoyed my grotesque sense of humor.
