Closed-Circuit TeleVision is a common abbreviation that describes video cameras, cabling and monitoring/recording equipment usually intended as an aid in premise security as well as for visual evidence collection. CCTV's main difference from its broadcasting counterpart is the relatively limited distance the video signal has to travel - usually within the confines of one installation - and the fact that there is only one video channel per each feed.

Starting in the late 1960s, CCTV has become a staple of security equipment in such organizations as banks, shopping centers, government facilities, schools and universities as well as other types of businesses that benefit from the system's ability to deter violent crimes and theft.

With the advent of the high definition and networked IP cameras CCTV industry is undergoing rapid change. The new cameras allow the use of such technologies as facial recognition as well as off-site storage and processing of the collected video data.

Many aspects of CCTV technology, especially its use in public places, are controversial to many privacy advocates. Much of the future development of this technology will have to go hand in hand with improving legislation that regulates the legal use of new CCTV features.
