A CGMS (Continuous Glucose Monitoring System) is a medical device used by people with diabetes for constantly monitoring blood sugar. The CGMS has a sensor that is inserted just below the surface of the skin and sends the data to a receiver that records the results. Most devices report the result every 5 minutes. A CGMS is an excellent tool for tracking ongoing trends in people with diabetes. Does working out raise blood sugar? Are you constantly dropping low in the middle of the afternoon? With 288 data points instead of 15 or less, it's easier to see exactly what is happening as when.

In 2008, the JDRF released the first study showing that a CGMS improves glucose control. More and more insurance companies are now willing to cover this important device.
