chemo
Chemo is the shortened term for chemotherapy, which is the treatment of cancer with a combination of drugs that aim to inhibit the production of cancerous cells. The most widespread type of treatment involves the use of medication that kills rapidly diving cells, indiscriminate of their origin and purpose. This usually means that chemotherapy will damage healthy, non-cancerous cells as well.
There are several possible treatments for cancer aside cancer fighting drugs, including surgery, radiation therapy, complementary and alternative medicine, as well as palliative care. Treatment works best if it is used as early as possible, from the very first noticeable signs of cancer.
Immunosuppression, myelosuppression, infertility and teratogenicity count among the most common side effects of chemotherapy. Targeted therapy represents a more modern type of treatment and includes drugs that act only against cancer cells, therefore it is not grouped together with conventional chemotherapy.
