    Senate passes “Child Safe Viewing Act” (S. 602)

    Yesterday, the Senate passed S. 602, “The Child Safe Viewing Act of 2007,” which was introduced by Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) in February 2007. The bill requires the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to study the market for “advance blocking technologies” (i.e., parental controls and rating systems)

    Amidst an economic crisis, the Congress found some time this week to address online threats to children. The Protect Our Children Act, introduced by Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., made it through the Senate Thursday.

    The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's ruling today, affirming that the Child Online Protection Act (COPA) is unconstitutional. It's the latest development in the legal saga surrounding COPA, the 1998 law that would make it a crime to publish online content that is deemed harmful to minors unless it's protected behind an age-verification or credit card screen.
