Alert! Chimurenga magazine and UCT’s Africa Centre for Cities have teamed up to create a new journal, the African Cities Reader, which is calling for submissions for its launch issue, organised around the theme, “Pan-African Practices”. And they’re paying 500 greenbacks a pop.

Back in the homeland (South Africa specifically), watch out for the Pan African Space Station, “… a 30-day music intervention from September 12 - October 12, on radio and the internet, as well as venues across greater Cape Town.” It’s curated by DJ Ntone publisher and editor of Chimurenga Magazine and Neo Muyanga (one of the people behind BLK Sonshine).

“Chimurenga means uprising, or struggle, and the word (and associated form of music) was closely linked to Robert Mugabe’s efforts [and the attempts of black Zimbabweans] in the ’60s and ‘70s to wrest Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) from colonial control.” Mugabe and his junta also referred to his more recent violence against his own people as the Third Chimurenga.
