Suffering. Not a word I hear much when I stop on "Christian" TV networks these days. We like to focus on more upbeat topics here in America. Suffering is not something that most Americans under the age of 75 or so have experienced and we don't want to believe it could ever happen here. But it can.

Believe it or not, this isn’t a political post. Despite what weather satellites may reveal, the United States, if viewed from space, has never more resembled a massive, angry red wound than it does now. And the salt? Try the Iraq war, terrorism, our status in the world, immigration, or the economic meltdown.

On a recent car trip, my wife and I were telling our son what the world was like when we were his age. One immediate difference between 2008 and 1970 is that people worried about their reputations. Having a bad reputation ruined nearly everything in life and was one of the most difficult things to overcome.

Too much of what passes for Christianity in the West is not of the Spirit but of the soul. It’s the Christianity of dynamic personalities, brilliant thinkers, assertive leaders, and so on. But little of it is of the Spirit of God. If you read my previous post on this issue, you’ll know what I mean One of my favorite authors is Watchman Nee.

It’s one of those soggy days in southern Ohio that presages autumn. It’s also one of those days where my mind reels from a whirlwind of small thoughts, many inspired by the political season now upon us. So consider today a showcase. Maybe one of these will grow up and become a bigger post someday.

Almost a year ago, I wrote about 100 truths I’d learned in 30 years as a Christian. Every year I learn a few more truths about life and faith. I consider this to be one of the most penetrating truths I’ve learned this year: A man who lacks humility, no matter how gifted he might be , will have that lack taint everything good in his nature.
