Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrated on the fifth of May. This holiday commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle of Pueblo in 1862 during the French-Mexican War. Cinco de Mayo is often confused with Mexico's Independence Day, which is September 16.

In the United States, areas with large Mexican-American populations celebrate their culture and heritage during Cinco de Mayo. The holiday is celebrated with parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing, traditional food and parades. The largest festivals are found in Chicago, Portland and Denver.

In places like Mexico City, the battle is re-enacted.  Men dress as French and Mexican soldiers and generals, women as soldaderas.  Soldaderas, cooked for and looked after the solders.
