Tag details

Circuit City had its beginning in 1949 when owner Samuel Wurtzel opened up a retail television store named Ward's in Richmond, Virginia. After modestly expanding its operations over the next few decade, Ward's officially became Circuit City in 1984.

Since then, Circuit City has expanded to over 800 stores nationwide and more than a dozen international outlets. However, In 2007, the retail consumer electronics company went through some difficult financial times, culminating in the firing of approximately 3,400 employees and closing of dozens of stores. The employees let go were apparently making more than market salary.

In the United States, Circuit City's main competitor is Best Buy.
