civil rights

Tag details

Within the United States, civil rights refer to a set of rights that are guaranteed to citizens by the constitution. Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion are but a few examples of civil rights.

Civil rights laws, however, are meaningless without the support of the executive branch and enforcement from Civil Rights Enforcement Agencies. Civil rights are guaranteed by the United States constitution but enforcing these rights often proves to be an ongoing task.

Civil rights can also address disability rights, as evidenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The rights of all citizens, irrespective of physical abilities are protected under civil rights laws.
