The term clothes broadly defines pieces of fabric that are used to cover the body for a variety of reasons, including to offer protection against hot or cold weather, rain, solar radiation, or even environmental health hazards.


Clothes have a long history, dating back to the Stone Age, when humans used furs and hide to cover their bodies. The primary function of early clothes was likely to protect against unfavorable weather. In warmer hemispheres, early humans likely used leaves and grass to to shelter themselves against rain.

In modern times, clothes serve a multitude of purposes aside from protecting the body. They are often used to make a fashion statement and can provide a venue for a person to express their creativity and individuality. Consequently, the fashion industry is one of the most profitable in the world, with many fashion designers claiming that making clothes allows the creator to express themselves artistically much like in any other medium.

The Internet has made it popular and viable for independent designers to share their creativity and work. This women's clothes - South Africa platform, for example, gives fashion designers an avenue to promote their brands and to expose their products to the general public.


Clothes can be made either of natural fabric, like cotton, wool, silk and linen, or synthetic materials, like nylon, polyester, spandex, and rayon. Modern science allows us to replicate the texture and appearance of real leather and furs, which has lead to the spread of artificial (or faux) leather and fur items of clothing. Synthetic leather can be produced in a number of ways, either from plastic, leather scraps heavily layered with polyurethane (PU leather), or out of a material known as polymeric imitation leather, which is made from a polyester base layer coated with plastic. This fabric is sometimes also called leatherette.

Fake fur is made of synthetic fibers that are arranged to imitate the pattern and feel of real fur. It was first produced in 1929, and has commercially been available since the 1950s, although its popularity has largely been attributed to the recent spread of animal rights groups. Fake fur can also be used to stuff pillows, make toys, but also to decorate the hoods of winter clothing items, like parkas.

Fashion shows are often considered the main source of trends and styles for clothes. They occur every season, during an event known as Fashion Week. This allows fashion designers to showcase their latest lines of clothing, thus deciding what is hot and what is not for each season.
