cloud storage

Tag details

Cloud storage is simply "computer storage space", but instead of being on the same machine, or on a peripheral attached to the machine, or on the local network, the user stores his or her files "in the cloud".

The "cloud" is so-called because the data is being "stored" somewhere that isn't necessarily known to the user, in terms of the exact "connections" that are implemented to send the files. Network folk "draw" this as a "cloud symbol" to simplify things.

Cloud storage is more often than not, very secure. It is usually stored on fast hardware and is accessible by the user anywhere they are, on any device that is connected to the 'net, providing the user provides the correct credentials.

Determining the best online storage is often just opinion. Big name companies are getting into the game and since storage is cheap, little can go wrong, and it is a valuable service because a lot of people are accessing the Internet through multiple devices, it's a no-brainer for a lot of companies to "share their space", sometimes for free, and often for a fee when the "free space" gets filled.

In general, a folder exists on each of your devices, and files are "dropped" into it and "stored" in the "cloud" and "accessible" from "anywhere" from an Internet connected device, providing the user has the correct credentials.

Popular cloud storage services include Dropbox and Google Cloud Storage and "online backup" companies like Mozy and JustCloud.
