computer software

Computer software, or just software as it is most often referred to, is dependent on the hardware it is running on. The term software was coined as an opposite to hardware. The easiest way to explain the terms is to state that hardware can be touched while software cannot be.

Many different types of software exist from applications like Microsoft Word and Office to operating systems like Windows, to computer games that can be played on gaming systems like the Playstation 3, to websites like Facebook or Google.

Software is created and developed by using different techniques such as programming and scripting languages or machine code.

A wide variety of programming languages and scripting languages exist today from C++ and Java to web based frameworks such as PHP, XML and HTML.
