computing

Remember that robot from the old Lost In Space TV show who went around saying "that does not compute" all the time? Well, you could say that robot was computing...or not. But to the tech-head, computing is the oil that greases the engine.

Computing, by most definitions, is the simple act of using a computer. Broken down into the more complex language of those who create computer hardware or write software programs, computing more specifically refers to how people use computers to collect or manipulate data through the use of computer components and programs.

Computing
could also be considered one of the functions of information technology (or IT). Computing is sometimes also used as a broader term to describe such complex disciplines as programming, developing software and hardware and writing computer languages. On the other hand, things as basic as downloading a file, gathering information or even just surfing the internet for fun, could be called computing.
