One of the things I mentioned a few weeks ago was that summer is a time of increased expenses for many of us. One of the expenses we have is air conditioning. It gets hot, so you turn it on. However, in this time economic uncertainty, conserving energy is one of the ways you can save money.

Yesterday I decided to visit the Richmond Metro Zoo.   I believe this zoo was built by an individual although I couldn’t find anything on the net about it.  I remember it being a lot smaller the last time we went about five years ago.  And according to some info I did find they did have a 250K expansion “this year”.

Go to a farmer’s market. Check Local Harvest or the Eat Well Guide. Another resource that is still under construction (but has a bunch of interesting information) is Food Routes.org. Buy “low milage” food. Start small if you need to, and select foods that are from closer to you if you aren’t quite ready to eat local.

I was raised as a child watching my mother hang clothes on the line to dry outside. As I grew older, it was my job to freeze my fingers while removing the jeans from the line in the middle of the winter. I really didn’t think much about conserving energy, or the smell of the towels after blowing in the wind all day.

We’ve been hearing more and more about people taking vacations close to home this summer (Who thinks of those fusion words, anyway? I’m so impressed– and jealous). Anyway, when my kids were little and we had no money to travel anywhere “big”, like Disney World, we always did the so-called Staycations, traveling to fun spots a mere two hours from home.
