The old joke is that when someone says they are a consultant it just means they are currently unemployed.

Although this may indeed sometimes be the case, a consultant is usually someone who is a professional in their field of knowledge and knows a lot about their area of expertise. A consultant is sometimes self-employed (hence the unemployed joke), but usually they work for a consulting firm.

The advantage of a client hiring a consultant is the client does not have to hire an in-house expert and give that person benefits, vacation days, insurance, etc. The client can tap into the expertise of someone without having to retain them on a full-time salary. The client can employ the consultant for as long or as short as they need them. The consultant, on the other hand, gets to work for a rotating group of clients. Some consultants may work as internet marketing consultants, while others may work as engineering consultants.

Peter Druker once said, "My greatest strength as a consultant is to be ignorant and ask a few questions." Bloggers speaking about consultants can be found at sites like top-consultant and guerrillaconsulting.
