contest

Generally a contest is an event on which a winner is selected among two or more participants and rewarded by the contest host with prizes that can be either tangible or intangible in nature. Sometimes a contest is sponsored by companies or organizations who actively take part by donating prizes.

A contest is held with detailed rules, guidelines and obligations of entry, duration of the contest, details of prizes to be rewarded, and additional information. Later, the winner is notified and a prize is awarded.

Today contests are not only confined to the real world, but are also spread across the virtual world. The blogosphere is host to many contests or giveaways. The main purpose of holding a contest at a blog is for promotional purposes. A recent contest at Blogcritics, for example, promised Over 100 Great Free Gifts!
