Cosmetic, at its root, means "beautifying." Cosmetics are anything that enhances a person's appearance or odor. Even though soap is not considered a cosmetic, just about everything else we put on our bodies falls into this category.

The FDA defines cosmetics as anything "intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions."

Cosmetics have been a part of human culture ever since the very beginning. In fact, archaeological evidence of cosmetics has been found dating as far back at 3500 BC in Egypt. Images, busts, and masks of Egyptian royalty such as Nefertiti and Tutankhamen have been discovered with eye makeup and other cosmetic enhancements clearly evident.

Cosmetics have journeyed from ancient Egypt to modern day. Today, make-up and other cosmetics have become a mainstay in word culture, especially among the female population. Make-up, lipstick, foundation, powder, rouge, mascara, nail polish, and other cosmetic equipment have all become household names and have found their way into bathrooms across the world.
