Cosmetics is a multi billion industry with major companies that have been in existence for decades, such as L’Oreal and Estee Lauder, having the lion’s share. Avon is the leading direct selling cosmetics company. Cosmetics can attract controversy. Customers are wary of toxic ingredients, allergens, and animal testing. Manufacturers have had to take note of these concerns and have brought out all natural treatments and organic products. Many of the new formulas in cosmetics are hypoallergenic and designed to be mild on skin and not conflict with acne treatment.

Cosmetics appeared in the western world in the middle ages and by the mid 19th century were in widespread use. The original cosmetics such as lipstick, foundation, powder, rouge, mascara and nail polish, have grown to thousands of products catering for every possible skin type and color.
